Leicestershire

Whitwick...Griffydam...Coleorton

The north Leicestershire coalfield was one of the nearest coalmining areas to Hucknall and more miners were recruited from here than anywhere else outside of Nottinghamshire. The Ellis family and their partners, who owned the Hucknall collieries, had considerable business interests and knowledge of the coal industry in this part of Leicestershire, making it an obvious first stop in the search for new recruits. The Leicestershire miners were more used to working in open cast and shallow seem mines, and for them deep mining would have been a new experience.
