This was a successful coalfield but going throught a period of consolidation at the time when Hucknall needed labour. In common with Hucknall, these were deep mine collieries, and in addition to providing many underground workers from here also were recruited the majority of the senior and middle colliery managers. Both Hucknall collieries employed underviewers (senior managers) and pit deputies from this region. Underviewers were provided with accommodation at the colliery and a number of other senior staff were housed in colliery row on Watnall Road.
