1884 February: R.J. Dexter cigar factory in Whyburn St. enlarged to provide employment for 500 women.
October: Mr J Raynor opens a hosiery factory in Byron St.
November: Coffee Tavern opens in High St. comprising coffee, library, games and assembly rooms.

1886 June: Human remains found whilst excavating for new housing. A dozen shallow trenches found containing the bodies of full grown males some laid on top of each other.
1887 Library built at cost of £2,000.
Cemetery opens.
December: Coffee Tavern and reading room opens on Butler's Hill.
1888 May: Henry Drury died from head injuries incurred during a prize fight with John Gamer in Hucknall.
