The recruits from Warwickshire came mostly from Sowe (Walsgrave on Sowe) and the surrounding area, which lies just to the north of Coventry. Sowe and Hucknall had much in common; in both towns the major industries were mining and textiles, but in Hucknall the economy was in better state of health. The Wyken colliery in Sowe dated from the first half of the century and the textile industry, which was centred on the production of silk ribbon, had collapsed after import duties were lifted in 1860. So it was not only experienced miners who arrived from Sowe; their wives and daughters were also able to put their own skills to use as dressmakers. Most of the Warickshire families settled to the north of the town either side of Annesley Road.
